Location: The Mautino State Fish & Wildlife Area is located in Bureau County south of Sheffield and west of Buda on the Buda Blacktop between IL Route 40 and US Route 34.

Description: Mautino SFWA is mostly un reclaimed strip mine ground containing several lakes of various sized. The site contains 911 total acres, 891 acres of which are available for archery deer and turkey hunting and 40 acres are available for dove hunting.

All regulations found in the Illinois Wildlife Code, Federal Regulations and Administrative Orders will apply unless area regulations are more restrictive.

Special Area Regulations:

  1. During the first five days of the season, all hunters must register with the check station personnel. The site hunter quota will be filled by a drawing held at 11 a.m.

  2. Beginning September 6, all hunters must register and report their harvest at the hunter registration box. Non hunters allowed in the field with the dove hunter.

  3. Hunting is allowed in designated areas only.

  4. Hunting is from perimeter of field within 10 feet of numbered stakes.

  5. Only non-toxic shot (as defined by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 50 CFR 20), #6 steel shot or smaller or #7½ bismuth shot, tungsten, or HeviShot or smaller, may be possessed.

  6. Windshield permits must be displayed on the dash of the vehicle used to transport the hunter. These permits are issued for the season at the Hennepin Canal Visitors Center starting the Tuesday after Labor Day.

  7. Deer, fall turkey, coyote, and raccoon hunting are archery only.

  8. All deer harvested must also be checked in / reported as outlined in the statewide rules & regulations for reporting deer harvested during the regular statewide deer seasons.

  9. Season open only when the site archery deer season is open.

  10. Further restrictions may exist. See posted regulations before hunting.

It Shall Be Unlawful:

  1. For any person to consume any alcoholic beverage or illegal drugs or to be under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs while on the area for the purpose of hunting.

  2. To park other than in designed parking areas.

  3. To construct or use any stand or accessory using nails, screws, or any devise which pierces, cuts or otherwise damages the bark of the tree on which it is installed or to trim limbs and /or cut woody vegetation to enhance the stand location.

  4. To be in the hunting area during the season if you are not hunting except as noted.

  5. To possess an uncased shotgun outside of the hunting area.

  6. To light or use an open fire within the hunting area.

  7. To hunt at the area if the Site Superintendent or his authorized representative determine and announce that conditions are unsafe and have posted the area accordingly.

  8. To hunt on this area without first declaring game killed on a previous hunt; either on the hunter’s person or in his vehicle.
